Little Scientists in the Making: Exploring Blood Cells Through Hands-On STEAM Learning

Recently, our classroom transformed into a mini science laboratory as our young scientists explored the fascinating world of blood cells through a hands-on STEAM experience.

🩸 Learning About Blood Cells

Before beginning our activities, the children were introduced to simple concepts about blood and blood cells.

We learned that everyone has red blood cells and white blood cells, which play important roles in keeping our bodies healthy. The children were also introduced to the idea that people have different blood types and were shown what a blood cell looks like.

Rather than simply learning these ideas from a worksheet or book, we turned our classroom into an interactive learning environment where children could explore the concepts through different stations.

🔬 Exploring Through Hands-On Activities

❤️ Blood Cell Sensory Bin

Our sensory exploration began with a water bead sensory bin filled with red water beads.

The children used their hands to explore the texture and movement of the water beads while making connections to our blood cell theme. Sensory experiences like this also encourage children to explore materials, use their senses, and engage in hands-on discovery.


🩸 Blood Type Sorting Station

At our blood type sorting station, children were introduced to the idea that people can have different blood types.

Sorting activities provide opportunities for children to practice classification and organization while connecting mathematical thinking to a real-world science topic.



🔴 Creating Blood Cells

The children also had an opportunity to create their own blood cells using foam noodles.

By manipulating and assembling materials, children could create a visual representation of what they had been learning. This activity encouraged creativity while giving them another way to connect with the science concept.



🔬 Blood Cell Observation & Drawing

At our observation station, children used microscopes to explore blood-cell images and representations.

After observing, they created their own drawings.

This encouraged children to slow down, look closely, and communicate what they noticed through art. Observation and drawing can be wonderful ways for young children to demonstrate their understanding of a new concept.



🧪 Test Tube & Dropper Station

Our laboratory wouldn't be complete without test tubes!

Children used droppers at our test tube station to transfer liquid between containers. While this was a fun part of our science laboratory, it also provided an opportunity to practice fine-motor control, hand-eye coordination, and careful manipulation of materials.

The children were excited to take on the role of little scientists as they worked with the different tools and materials.


🌟 One Activity, Many Learning Opportunities

What may look like a fun science activity actually provided children with opportunities to develop skills across several areas of learning.

Through our blood cell exploration, children practiced:

  • 🔬 Scientific exploration — observing and learning about the human body

  • 🧠 Critical thinking — making observations and connections

  • 🔢 Sorting and classification — exploring different blood types

  • Fine-motor skills — using droppers and manipulating materials

  • 🎨 Creative expression — creating and drawing blood cells

  • 🤝 Social learning — exploring and participating alongside classmates

Our curriculum describes this experience as a hands-on STEAM activity where children create a simple blood model and explore the main parts of blood and their basic functions.



🔎 Why Hands-On STEAM Matters in Preschool

Young children don't have to wait until elementary school to begin exploring science.

Preschool is a wonderful time to encourage children to ask questions such as:

What is this?What does it do?What does it look like?How is it different?What do you notice?

When children can touch, observe, sort, create, and experiment, abstract ideas become more concrete and memorable.

At Dream-i Education, our goal is not simply to give children information. We want to create experiences that encourage them to become curious, confident learners.

Our blood cell exploration was a wonderful example of how we bring STEAM learning into the preschool classroom.

From sensory exploration and sorting to microscopes, creative modeling, and fine-motor science stations, our young scientists had many opportunities to explore one topic from different perspectives.

And perhaps the best part?

They weren't just learning about science.

They were doing science.
